2 soldiers killed, P1.8M robbed in Catbalogan ambush

Catbalogan City – Two soldiers were killed on the spot in an ambush on a military truck just outside this city allegedly perpetrated by members of the New People’s Army (NPA) on the eve of Friday which also left three wounded soldiers. 


The victims, troopers of the 14th Infantry “Avengers” Battalion based in Dao, Oras in Eastern Samar, were reported to have just pulled out battalion’s subsistence allowance for a month’s spending when their army truck was ambushed while traversing the highway between the villages of Lagundi and Socorro en route back to Eastern Samar. 

The subsistence allowance, amounting to P1.8 million, was reported missing after the incident and is believed to have been robbed by the perpetrators. 8ID finance people have already requested for the replacement of the tugged money. 

Police reports disclosed that the military truck, carrying 5 soldiers, was initially blown out with a landmine followed and series of gunfire ensued instantly killing two soldiers and wounding the other three. 

The fatalities were identified as CPL Chelito Edera and CPL Christopher Joey Campos. The wounded were identified as 1st Lt. Cherwin Lapura, PFC Macantantan and PFC Calaboroso. The wounded were rushed to 8ID hospital after the incident.

High officials of the division have expressed concern on the habitual use of land mines by the rebels as this violates International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Maj. Gen. Jet Belarmino, Division Commander, has already made a public statement that the army will increase its combat operations against terrorists groups in its area of responsibility.
