8ID supports 18-day campaign to end Violence Against Women

CAMP LUKBAN, Catbalogan City - The Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Division based in this city demonstrate its full supports in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) campaign to end Violence Against Women (VAW) on a launching ceremony held recently.

The VAW campaign will be observed globally from November 25 to December 12, 2015 to call the elimination of all forms of violence, may it be physical or psychological against women.

The launching of the campaign awaken the soldier’s awareness and reminded everyone’s responsibility and commitment to end violence with the theme: End VAW, It’s Our Duty; Gains and Ways Forward.”

The highlights of the said celebration were the readings of messages by General Hernando DCA Iriberri, Chief of Staff of the AFP (CSAFP) and Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Voltaire T. Gazmin during the flag raising ceremony at 8ID Headquarters, Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar on November 23, 2015.

In CSAFP’s message which was read by Brig. Gen. Demy T. Tejares, AFP, 8ID, Assistant Division Commander, Gen. Iriberri conveyed that the AFP strongly supports this laudable cause and gladly joins the Philippine Commission for Women (PCW) in promoting the awareness advancement of this advocacy. 

The AFP is one and in unity with the DND in the widest promotion of this movement and will commit its active participation in all activities lined-up in the succeeding weeks as the AFP’s way of showing its solidarity with the rest of the nation.

The message of Hon. Secretary Gazmin was read by Major General Jet B. Velarmino, AFP, 8ID Commander which calls on all AFP members to learn about VAW, and why it must be condemned; to respect women and treat them with respect, whether they’re eight or 88, and regardless if they’re our partner, our co-worker, part of our peer group or a total stranger.

In Gazmin’s message, all soldiers are also reminded to keep in mind that masculinity does not include degrading or abusing women and to never remain silent when an act of violence of women happens.
