Politics mulled as motive of Taft killing

Borongan, Eastern Samar – One week towards the May 9, 2016 elections, the zero-death election record in Eastern Samar was spilled with blood after a killing incident took place in Taft on 29 April 2016.

According to a PNP report obtained by Sinirangan News Plus, a shooting incident took place in Brgy. Polangi of the municipality of Taft on 29 April 2016 resulting to the instantaneous death of a certain Jeorge Mayor, a resident of the said barangay.

The suspect was identified as Filomino Chicano, a neighbor of the victim. The casualty, 35 years of age and a resident of Polangi, was known to be a political leader of Taft mayoralty candidate Maricon Adalim (LP) while the suspect, a retired army, is known be a supporter and relative of incumbent Mayor Marian Libanan.

The sitting mayor is a daughter of gubernatorial candidate Marcelino Libanan. According to authorities, the victim was driving a motorcycle when Chicano flagged him down and eventually shooting the former with a short firearm hitting him in the head and many parts of his body killing him instantly.

The suspect fled on a motorcycle immediately after the incident. The getaway vehicle was later on recovered at his residence.

The Taft police also recovered nine (9) pieces of fired cartridges for 9mm pistol and one (1) magazine for .45 caliber pistol loaded with eight (8) live ammunition. The authorities are conducting a more thorough investigation.

Adalim’s camp was fast to declare that the killing of Mayor was politically instigated. They claim that they can unseat the incumbent Libanan in this election. Libanan’s camp has still to release a statement regarding the allegation.

To recall, P/SSupt. Romeo Campomanes, ESPPO Provincial Director, identified Taft as one of the seven (7) municipalities under COMELEC (Commission on Elections) watch list in the province. The others are Arteche, Gen. MacArthur, Jipapad, Dolores, Quinapondan and Can-avid.

Campomanes said that these towns were placed on the list due to previous election violence in the area. Earlier, Campones declared that they are not discounting the possibility that some politicians may employ organizing Private Armed Groups (PAGs) especially at the height of the campaign to ensure victory.
