Just In: NGCP braces for Tropical Depression “Ambo”

Tacloban City - With Tropical Depression “Ambo” about to make a landfall on Saturday, the National Grid of the Philippines (NGCP) has implemented the necessary preparations and precautions to minimize its impact on transmission operations and facilities.
In a social media post of Betty Martinez, the power system operator and transmission service provider, the preparations include ensuring the reliability of communications equipment, availability of hardware materials and supplies necessary for the repair of damages to facilities, as well as the positioning of line crews in strategic areas, to facilitate immediate restoration work.

NGCP’s Integrated Disaster Action Plan (IDAP) prescribes these and other procedures to ensure the readiness of all power transmission facilities expected to be affected by the passage of the weather disturbance.

NGCP’s Overall Disaster Command Center monitors all power restoration activities, reports, and updates from the Regional Command Centers in North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, whichever is directly affected by the weather disturbance.

Meanwhile, PAGASA’s 5 p.m. advisory said that as of 4 p.m., Ambo was estimated at 140 km northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, packing maximum winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 60 kph.

It said Ambo is forecast to move north northwest at 15 kph and will be 220 km east southeast of Aparri, Cagayan Saturday afternoon. By Sunday afternoon, it is expected to be 280 km east northeast of Basco, Batanes.

By Monday afternoon, it is expected to be 640 km northeast of Basco, Batanes.

“Residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under Signal No. 1 are alerted against possible flash floods and landslides,” PAGASA said.

PAGASA also estimated the rainfall from Ambo to be from 15 to 25 mm per hour (heavy) within the storm’s 500-km diameter.

It added Ambo is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring rains over the western section of Southern Luzon and Visayas.
